What Is the UltraPulse® CO2 Laser?

The UltraPulse® CO2 laser by Lumenis® is an advanced fractional ablative laser designed to treat a range of skin concerns with minimal downtime and recovery. Using fractional ablative technology to vaporize microscopic sections of skin, the UltraPulse® laser eliminates aged, damaged skin while also sparing areas of non-treated skin, resulting in less trauma and a shorter recovery period.

The UltraPulse® offers both cosmetic and medical benefits, as it treats surface-level skin concerns such as sun damage while also stimulating collagen production below the surface for long-term improvement of fine lines and wrinkles. Our team at the Élan Clinic is excited to offer this device as part of our skin cancer treatment and prevention services, as it treats precancerous lesions such as actinic keratosis.

What Are My UltraPulse® CO2 Laser Options?

Cosmetic Skin Rejuvenation

The UltraPulse® CO2 laser is ideal for treating common skin concerns, including:

  • Acne scars
  • Textual irregularities
  • Hyperpigmentation and skin discoloration
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun damage and sun spots
  • Minor skin laxity

As the UltraPulse® laser energy precisely targets areas of the skin, dead and damaged skin is vaporized, leaving healthy areas to aid in the healing process. This has two effects: first, old, damaged skin is eradicated and sloughs off, while the laser energy prompts collagen production deep under the skin’s surface, eventually building up to improve skin laxity, fine lines and wrinkles, and scars. The UltraPulse® CO2 laser is terrific as a standalone procedure but can also be used as a very effective adjunct to blepharoplasty, facelift, or neck lift.

Treat Precancerous Lesions

The UltraPulse® CO2 laser can also be extremely effective in cancer prevention by treating precancerous lesions. Precancerous lesions are growths of abnormal cells that may develop cancer, but haven’t yet. Actinic keratosis, for example, is a rough scaly patch that appears on areas commonly exposed to the sun, such as the face, scalp, and hands.

The UltraPulse® laser breaks apart the damaged outer layer of the skin, including precancerous cells, allowing the body to shed them harmlessly. As the body responds to this damage, it produces more collagen and elastin to heal the skin and, at the same time, improve its tone, texture, and elasticity.

What Can I Expect from UltraPulse® CO2 Laser Treatments?

Your Consultation

A consultation with one of our aesthetic specialists is essential to determine if you are a candidate for the UltraPulse® treatment. You will be able to discuss your skin concerns and goals for the procedure, and we will suggest the appropriate plan.

If you are seeking care for a precancerous lesion, we recommend that you schedule a cancer screening to assess your condition. If our team agrees that UltraPulse® is the best skin cancer treatment option for you, we will create a treatment plan that best addresses your condition.

The UltraPulse® CO2 Laser Procedure

At the start of your UltraPulse® CO2 session, your laser technician will apply a topical numbing cream to the treated area and will wait until it is sufficiently numbed. Next, the laser will be applied to the targeted areas, using controlled energy to strategically damage specific areas of the skin, such as actinic keratosis. The intensity of the laser can be adjusted to suit your comfort level and aesthetic goals.

What Is UltraPulse® CO2 Laser Recovery Like?

CO2 laser resurfacing can make your skin more sensitive to sun damage. You’ll need to prepare for the treatment by avoiding sun exposure before and after your session. Your aesthetic technician will provide you with specific aftercare instructions to protect your skin and achieve ideal results.

Expect your skin to be red, swollen, and feel sunburned immediately after treatment. You can apply cold compresses to help with immediate swelling and discomfort, but these effects should subside within the first 24 hours. After that, you’ll need to protect your healing skin with gentle moisturizers and a strong daily SPF, paired with avoiding sun exposure.

Although the UltraPulse® protects the skin from damage through its fractional function, you may still experience about one to two weeks of downtime during which you’ll need to avoid the sun, makeup, and harsh skin care products. Part of the process is a peeling or scabbing period, during which the damaged or dead skin cells slough off to reveal the healthy skin underneath. Do not pick or peel your skin and scabs, as this can affect results.

Be sure to follow all of Dr. Lattyak’s recommendations for recovery, and call our office if you have any questions. You may be asked to schedule a follow-up appointment to check on the progress of your precancerous lesion if it has been treated.

When Will I See My UltraPulse® CO2 Laser Results?

Initial results are visible after the peeling process. While your skin may remain red for a few weeks, as the skin heals, you can start to see the benefits of the treatment. Your skin tone will be more even, with hyperpigmentation and sun spots reduced or eliminated. Your complexion will be smoother, with reduced acne scars, large pores, and dullness.

However, long-term results such as amplified collagen and elastin production take longer to appear, typically around three to six months post-treatment. This results in a more plump, youthful appearance; smoothed fine lines and wrinkles, smoother, softer skin, and improved skin laxity.

How Much Do UltraPulse® CO2 Laser Treatments Cost in Grass Valley, CA?

The cost of UltraPulse® CO2 laser treatments in Grass Valley depends on your specific needs and concerns, the severity of your skin concerns, and the number of sessions necessary. Your aesthetic provider will create a custom treatment plan for you and will provide you with an accurate cost estimate.
