What Is GentleCure™?

GentleCure™ is an Image-Guided SRT (Image-Guided Superficial Radiation Therapy), used to treat non-melanoma basal and squamous cell skin cancers. Using low amounts of X-ray energy to target cancer cells, GentleCure™ cures 99% of basal and squamous cancers without damaging surrounding tissue.

This is the first and only radiation treatment for skin cancer that uses ultrasound to provide precise imaging of the cancerous tumors, along with accurate visualization of the cancer as it shrinks and disappears throughout treatment.

How Is GentleCure™ Different From Other Skin Cancer Treatments?

GentleCure™ offers a flexible, non-invasive treatment for skin cancer that is effective, safe, and simple. In contrast to Mohs surgery, which requires layers of the skin and cancerous tissue to be meticulously scraped away, Image-Guided SRT is more precise and guided by technology, resulting in a quicker outcome.

Mohs, while effective and a popular treatment, is a much longer and more painful procedure than GentleCure™, requiring multiple hours or even multiple surgeries to complete. Your doctor also won’t know the size or depth of the cancer until the surgery has already begun, and more often than not, results in a sizable scar that requires reconstructive surgery to repair. Since most skin cancer is on the face, ears, or scalp, these scars are visible.

In contrast to other radiation therapies (which are used for internal cancers), Image-Guided SRT limits radiation exposure to the skin only, does not cause the patient to give off radiation after treatment, and does not affect the healthy cells around the cancer.

How Is GentleCure™ Skin Cancer Treatment Performed?

GentleCure™ treatment sessions can be completed in as little as ten minutes in the comfort of our office. Our trained staff administer the treatment using the GentleCure™ device to assess and treat the skin cancer.

To begin, ultrasound gel will be applied to the site of the cancer. Your technician will use the device’s imaging wand to produce an image of your cancer on a screen, determining its size, depth, and accurate location. Next, the arm of the device will be placed over the treatment area, and a precise dose of X-ray energy will be used to damage the cancer cells without harming the surrounding skin and healthy tissue. This process will be repeated multiple times a week until your cancer is cured.

What Is GentleCure™ Recovery Like?

After your GentleCure™ treatment, you can return to regular activities immediately. Image-Guided SRT treatments work by damaging the cancer cells, which are gradually replaced by healthy ones. This means that any redness or sensitivity in the treatment area will heal on its own after a few weeks. Your physician can recommend proper aftercare if necessary, like soothing ointments and sunscreen to help protect your skin.

When Can I Expect to Be Skin Cancer Free?

This will vary from person to person, depending on the type of cancer you have, as well as the location, size, and severity. Your specific treatment schedule will vary, although generally, patients come in three to four times a week for six to seven weeks.
