When aging signs appear in the eyelids, they can create a perpetually tired appearance. Blepharoplasty can combat drooping eyelid skin and puffy undereye bags to rejuvenate the eyes. This blog discusses aging eyelid signs, blepharoplasty techniques, and who is a good candidate for the procedure.

Ready to Rejuvenate Tired, Droopy Eyes?

Most of us look in the mirror at least once, if not several times, every single day. We’re used to our faces and the way we look—until something changes. One day, you may look in the mirror and notice that your eyes look perpetually tired or droopy, even after a good night’s sleep. This tired look is often the result of sagging upper eyelid skin or puffy undereye bags. These changes in the eyelids can occur as a result of genetics or the natural aging process.

It can be emotionally taxing to look at your reflection and be bothered by the changes in the appearance of your eyelids. Often, people feel that droopy eyes and undereye bags make them look older than their true age. The good news is that you don’t have to simply accept these changes, as eyelid surgery can provide transformative results for patients struggling with eye aging signs.

Choosing Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure that rejuvenates the eyes. This procedure leaves patients with a refreshed and youthful look. Blepharoplasty involves removing excess eyelid skin, redistributing fat, adjusting underlying tissues, and tightening the skin to transform the eyes and give them a lively, youthful appearance.

There are different types of eyelid surgery techniques offered to best suit your unique needs. At the Élan Clinic in Grass Valley, Dr. Bruce Lattyak performs the following blepharoplasty techniques:

  • Upper Blepharoplasty: Droopy eyes can be improved with upper eyelid surgery. This option trims excess, sagging upper eyelid skin to eliminate the drooping appearance. The remaining skin is smoothed and tightened, resulting in youthful and alert-looking eyes.
  • Lower Blepharoplasty: Puffy undereye bags are typically best treated with lower eyelid surgery. During this procedure, incisions are created in the lower lids, allowing your surgeon to remove excess fat pockets, reposition the tissues, tighten lax muscles, and remove excess skin.
  • Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty: Patients who struggle with puffiness under the eyes but have good skin elasticity may be good candidates for transconjunctival blepharoplasty. This technique removes puffy undereye bags via an incision inside the lower eyelid, smoothing the undereye skin without a visible scar.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

If eyelid surgery has piqued your interest, you may be wondering if you’re a good candidate for the procedure. The following criteria can be used as a loose baseline for determining candidacy:

  • Being in good general health
  • Having realistic expectations for blepharoplasty results
  • Wanting to remove droopy eyelid skin
  • Experiencing vision problems due to excess upper eyelid skin
  • Wanting to remove puffy undereye bags
  • Are bothered by aging eyelids and want to rejuvenate your look
